Personality types dictate so many things about our lives. From the friends we choose to the occupations we pursue, many things are determined at least in some part by our personalities. How you define yourself and how others perceive you influences every interaction and decision you make, and may also determine a great deal about the products and services you select as a consumer.
How Personality and Massage Relate
Like any decision you make about the products or services you purchase, massage choices can be dictated by your personality in many ways. Below we’ve compiled some observations we’ve made over the course of several years as massage therapy professionals. We’ve chosen to focus this article on the personality traits we’ve noticed are specific to each of our four main areas of practice: Full Body Relaxation Massage, Deep-Tissue Massage, Integrated Massage, and Relaxation Therapy. Each type of massage tends to attract a specific type of personality. Below we will go into more detail.
Full Body Relaxation Massage
People who elect to receive full body relaxation massage treatments tend to be more open and easy going. These clients thrive on new experiences and look at massage as a welcomed source of relaxation to break up their weekly routine. Many of our full body relaxation massage recipients are talkative and outgoing, kind and concerned, and possess a medium interest in health and fitness. Full body relaxation massage clients also tend to be busy, and use massage sessions not only for physical relaxation, but also a chance to clear the mind and rejuvenate the spirit.
Those who contact us for deep-tissue massage work are often very driven individuals who possess a great deal of poise, and may be less talkative than other clients. Deep-tissue massage clients are serious about their health and concerned about the state of their muscle tissue. They look at massage not only as a positive relaxing experience, but also as a necessary medical exercise that adds to their quality of life.
Integrated massage combines aspects of both full body relaxation massage and deep-tissue massage, and accordingly the clients that are attracted to integrated massage therapy tend to combine personality traits of multiple groups. Integrated massage clients look at massage therapy as both a relaxation outlet and a medically necessary activity. They seek out new experiences, and revel in familiar ones as well. They tend to be socially oriented, and look to massage as a means to improve both their physical health and their mood overall.
Relaxation therapy clients tend to be free-spirited and filled with life. They are confident and full of conviction, yet humble and serious when the therapy session gets underway. Many relaxation therapy clients look to massage therapy as a means of spiritual cleansing, and have a profound belief in nature and the connectivity of energy within all things. Relaxation therapy clients are non-traditional and may be considered daredevils or risk-takers. They aren’t afraid of a challenge, and enjoy the curve balls life can sometimes throw.
